LATAM Starts 10 Tons of Recycled Uniforms in Brazil and Waste Compensation from 12 Airports

LATAM started two projects in Brazil within its
sustainability agenda. The first project is the upcycling of used uniforms,
which will intelligently transform 10 tons of uniforms into new pieces to
promote a virtuous circular economy. The second project is the compensation of
92 tons of waste generated on flights to 12 Brazilian airports without selective
collection service. They are: Porto Seguro (BA), Comandatuba (BA), Boa Vista
(RR), Jaguaruna (SC), Macapá (AP), Natal (RN), Palmas (TO), Porto Velho (RO),
Rio Branco (AC), São José do Rio Preto (SP), Santarém (PA) and Teresina (PI).
The project for the intelligent transformation of used LATAM
Brasil uniforms will take place through a partnership with Revoada, a
consultancy based in Porto Alegre (RS) and specialized in creative reuse
(upcycling) to reduce the use of resources through sustainable fashion. The
waste compensation project will be made possible through a partnership with
eureciclo, a company that offers solutions for reverse packaging logistics
throughout Brazil. Altogether, the volume processed in the two projects would
be capable of completely filling two Boeing 767 cargo aircraft.
“We are at the beginning of our journey with the challenge
of being an increasingly sustainable company, a commitment we made in May 2021.
Developing projects and building partnerships like the one we are opening now,
with Revoada and eureciclo, are examples of actions that will help us in this
great challenge”, said Gislaine Rossetti, director of Institutional and
Regulatory Relations at LATAM Brazil.
LATAM's work in partnership with Revoada started in January
2022. The process with the uniforms used consists of four steps: washing,
de-characterization and donation to entities that generate social impact;
donation to cooperatives of seamstresses and artisans in Porto Alegre (RS) that
will be able to transform the pieces and sell their own created products;
transformation of part of the material into 1,000 corporate gifts for LATAM and
destination of unused leftovers for crushing and transformation into tow and/or
alternative fuel in cement production.
“We are very happy with this partnership between Revoada and
LATAM for the intelligent disposal of their old uniforms. We believe that the
solutions to many of the complex problems that we have in the world today, such
as the generation of waste, will be collaborative solutions between different
companies and organizations. Together we can generate more positive impact”,
said Adriana Tubino, founding partner of Revoada.
The partnership with eureciclo will connect LATAM to state
cooperatives at the 12 airports selected for the reprocessing of 92 tons of
plastic, paper and aluminum. The volume is equivalent to all the waste that
LATAM generated in 2019 on board its flights to and from these locations.
“We are proud to be part of initiatives like these”, said
Thiago Carvalho Pinto, CEO of eureciclo. “We know that the path of
sustainability should not be walked alone. Through partnerships, we can expand
the results and give scalability to the actions, as well as in this joint
action with LATAM, which will prevent almost 100 tons of material from reaching
nature incorrectly”, he added.
LATAM Group Long-term Commitment to Sustainability
Together, the partnerships launched in Brazil will help the
LATAM Group in its agenda of commitments to sustainability. As announced in 2021,
the company aims to eliminate single-use plastics by 2023 and be a
zero-waste-to-landfill company by 2027, in addition to other global goals
focused on four pillars: Environmental Management, Climate Change, Circular
Economy and Shared Value.
Currently, the intelligent disposal of used uniforms by the
LATAM Group is already taking place at its affiliates in Peru, Colombia and
Ecuador - and should also start soon in Chile. In addition, the compensation of
waste generated on board the company's flights is part of its program called
“Recicla tua Viagem”, which has already been launched at its affiliates in
Chile and Ecuador.
